Hello friends,
I'm sending this to warn you about an incredibly dangerous piece of legislation that is being considered by Congress. The EARN IT Act would weaken Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which protects online platforms from liability for content that is posted by their users. This would give the government too much power to censor online content and could lead to the mass surveillance of online users.
The EARN IT Act is a threat to your online freedom.
The EARN IT Act is being sold as a way to protect children from child sexual abuse material (CSAM). However, this is a false pretense. The government does not care about children. They are only interested in using this bill to crack down on free speech and privacy.
The "think of the children" approach has been used countless times throughout history, to con gullible citizens into thinking they're doing a good thing by giving up their freedoms. This is a dangerous game. Once you surrender your freedom, it's very hard to earn it back. If you can look beyond my silly wordplay (I couldn’t help myself), I trust you’ll discover how truly serious this is.
The EARN IT Act is a threat to our online freedom. We must stand up and oppose this bill before it is too late.
Here are some things you can do to help:
Contact your elected representatives and urge them to vote against the EARN IT Act.
Attend a rally or protest against the EARN IT Act.
Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper opposing the EARN IT Act. If you’re not a writer, or just need to save some time, use an AI text-generation platform. I hate to say it, but Google’s new tool, Bard, is really well-designed. I have some concerns, but they are out of the scope of this issue.
Talk to your friends and family about the EARN IT Act and why it is important to oppose it.
